a picture and a thousand words

February 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments

There is so much literature and news that we have read about OLPC and various perspectives associated with it.  Some of it, we have followed owing to our interest in the endeavor and related environment. There are agreements, disagreements, or plain neutrality of opinion.

This is what OLPC wiki says about the project, very nicely put.“The mission of the One Laptop per Child association is to develop a low-cost laptop—the “XO Laptop”—to revolutionize how we educate the world’s children. Our goal is to provide children around the world with new opportunities to explore, experiment, and express themselves.  Why do children in developing nations need laptops? Laptops are a window and a tool: a window into the world and a tool with which to think. They are a wonderful way for all children to learn learning through independent interaction and exploration.”However, something changed in my perspective and for the positive when I saw this photograph at Anne Gentle’s blog.   Link to the pic here    Anne herself has been involved with the project very closely and had blogged about it many times. However, this one time she managed to create a stronger, positive impact. The picture said it all. The change that it can bring to a child’s life;   The delight it will create for a kid and the vistas it can open for children worldwide;

How access to technology can bring about much sought after social equity and provide a level playing field to children;

 And last and not the least – kids love it!   ps: we will talk about the numbers some other time ;-)
