anees.jpgAneesudheen is currently working as a Senior Information Developer/Technical Writer at IBM India Pvt. Ltd. in the Integrated Technology Global Delivery department. He graduated with an M.A. in the English language and Literature. Following this, he worked as a Project Executive in Infosys (BPO). He successfully completed the TWB Fundamental Certification Program in September 2006. 

What domains have you worked on?

I have worked on domains like Storage Products and Software Platform Management Services — this includes process documentation of various software applications and tools

What kind of impact has this position (technical writer) had on your lifestyle?

Tremendous, I think there is stability in my career now. Moreover, I just love what I do.

What advice would you give to someone who is entering the field of technical writing?

Have a flair for writing; this career (Technical Writing) pays you for your writing skills. Learn a lot and adapt yourself to a project or process quickly. It is a rewarding career that you can rely on.

Does the company promote or encourage continuing education?

Yes, the company promotes Learning. However, you need to find your own path.

What kind of challenges is the industry currently facing?\

There is a difficulty in bringing in new projects. The whole industry has slowed down or rather we should say it is “Frozen”. Now it is slowly and steadily moving on. Let us hope for the best.

Are there any likely changes that may affect the industry in the next few years?

The industry has slowed down significantly. It will definitely take time for a steady growth. Therefore, the next few years we will see everyone’s attempt to stabilize their career and business.

What advice would you give to someone just entering this career track?

“Do you want to go for it?” If the answer is “Yes” then do not hesitate. Pursue you dreams with single mindedness, truly, nothing is out of reach.

What kinds of tasks do you complete during a typical day or week?

My day to day activities includes the following tasks:

  • Developing documents (User Manuals, Instructional Manuals, Product Manuals, Administrator’s Guides, Release Notes etc)
  • Conducting and attending Teleconferences and Net meetings with SMEs, Onsite Developers, Project Managers etc
  • Attending team meetings, preparing team reports and presentations
  • Editing and reviewing documents

What types of advancement opportunities are available for entry-level candidates in the Technical Writing field?

An entry-level candidate has to accept any offer that comes in their way as a Technical Writer, irrespective of the Project domain, Salary package etc. Once they are into this field, it depends up on his or her ability to learn, grow and to frame their career. There has to be an entry stage for everything in life. Be focused and aim high.

According to your definition of success, how successful have you been so far?

I started my career as a Technical Writer a few years back, today I work as a Senior Information Developer. Apart from developing the documents, I am in charge of reviewing and editing my team members’ documents.
