| Hello all, We attended the STC Workshop on “Enhancing your Career Skills” held on April 4th, 2009 at NetApps. A summary of the sessions is as follows:“The Seven Principles of Technical Writing” by Ram Venkatraman 1. Define your purpose. 2. Know your audience. 3. Plan your content. 4. Think visually. 5. Write clearly and precisely. 6. Use good page design. 7. Write ethically. “Professional Development Through Continuing Education” by Kumar Dhanagopal This session focused on the importance of learning something everyday in life. The various modes of learning are: • Read Learning should be adopted as an on-going process. The only prerequisite for this is to have an open mind. Everything you learn will help you in enhancing your knowledge. So, keep learning. “Career Path in Technical Writing” by Michelle Cherian Follow a sensible career path by starting in a team, stay long enough, manage yourself, manage a team and then go contracting. You are not much affected by the recession as you can work in different domains such as Telecom, Banking, Pharmaceuticals, Networking and Software. You should develop the habit of “communicating with” and not “communicating at”. This enables a two-way communication between a technical writer and the customer. Last but not the least work hard, work smart and enjoy your work. Panel Discussion This discussion was on the topic “Is it easy for writers to be entrepreneurs? Yes/No? Why?” (panelists: Rakesh Shukla, Usha Mohan and Pradeep Vasudev) |
